The CFCAC Story

As it continues to be today, the Community for Christ Assistance Center began as a prayer of local churches to help the needy in our community.

The Idea
Our Founding

With experience in a former church, a local pastor, Jim Trutwin of Golden Trinity Lutheran, saw the need for a centralized assistance center instead of many individual churches having small food pantries, clothing distributions, etc.

In March, the first organizational meeting was held to develop such a center with 13 churches support and a $47 offering to begin funding.

November 2004
Humble Beginnings
Grand Opening

In August of 2004, “Community for Christ Assistance Center” was selected as the name and a board of directors and officers were selected from representing churches. November 6, 2004, was the grand opening of CFCAC at a rented space (600 sq. ft.) at 112 East State Street in Camp Point. Open two days per week.

Wanda Leenerts was the volunteer director.

a New Location
2005 Continuing to Grow

2005 sees continued growth and need for the services of CFCAC.

The Center:

  • was now supported by 17 local churches
  • received tax-exempt status
  • made the directorship a salaried position
  • began partnerships with Central Illinois Food Bank and Hy-Vee Foods

With the need for more space and an office, the Board moved the Center to 308 East Wood Street (2,250 sq. ft.) in Camp Point after renovations.

2006-2008
More Partners, More Impact

2006 through 2008 saw CFCAC continue to increase services, increase in number of clients, supporting churches, and in hours to include Thursdays, started partnership with Midwest Food Bank and received grants to continue operation and financial assistance for clients.

2009
a BIG Year
Community Support Allows Building Purchase

2009 was a BIG year for CFCAC in many ways! In January, the Board purchased the Royalty Building (6,600 sq. Ft.) at 113 East Jefferson in Camp Point for $68,000 and within four months the new location was totally paid for by fundraisers and the generous support of the community and its 21 supporting churches!

An Open House was held on April 25, 2009.

Secondly, CFCAC became a funding partner of the United Way of Adams County in March. In July, Wanda Leenerts retired as CFCAC Director and Jessica Barnes was hired.

Betty Allen, former director CFCAC

Another big first for CFCAC happening in 2009 was the first School Fair being held for 150 local students.

2010
Award Winning
Governor’s Club Hometown Award

2010 was a monumental year when CFCAC won the Governor’s Club Hometown Award for the School Fair

2011
New Director

2011 saw the resignation of Jessica Barnes as Director and the hiring of Betty Allen as the director. (Director 3) CFCAC continued to grow in clients, customers and services.
In 2012, the CFCAC Food Pantry was remodeled with new appliances, flooring, shelves through a Tracy Family Foundation grant and many fundraisers were held to keep services supported.

2013-2018
New Staff & Updates

2013 saw the need of a position to primarily write grants and correspondence, so the position of an assistant director was officially developed.

2014-2017 - The need for food and assistance continued to increase.

New Outside signage was installed.

Betty Allen retired and Pat Heinecke was hired as the new director.

During 2018, CFCAC got a “spruce up” with new carpeting and fresh coat of paint throughout the building.

2019-2021
COVID Challenges
CFCAC Flu Shots

With the COVID pandemic, the operation of CFCAC changed but the mission did not. The Thrift Store was closed for 2 ½ months but the Food Pantry remained open with a “call-in/drive-by” process.

DOT Foods, Prairie Farms Dairy, and the USDA “Farmers to Families” helped our food clients by donating food.

In the fall, CFCAC partnered with John Wood Community College to sponsor GED preparation classes in Camp Point.

In 2021, CFCAC received Ameren grants to update the lighting system to LED and a refrigerator/freezer unit for our pantry.

A grant from the Illinois State Treasurer Charitable Trust was a great help for the food pantry.

Covid-19 and flu shot clinics were held.

2022
New Pantry Freezer

In 2022, another facility improvement was completed with the installation of the walk-in freezer on the east side of the building, accomplished through grants, donations, and in-kind labor and material donations.

Our New Mural

The new mural gracing the side of our building. A big thank you to all who made this possible and a tribute to our volunteers.

The Board and staff of CFCAC believe that God wants us to continue our mission of helping the needy in our area when we consider the following facts:

2004: starting with 13 supporting churches, $47 in the treasury, and a rented 600 sq. ft. Building, helping approximately 50 people per month with food and $4,000 financial assistance in that year.

2023: currently with 37 supporting churches, a budget of over $205,000, and own 6,000 sq. ft. building, helping approximately 550 people per month with food and over $76,000 financial assistance last year.

We ask for your continued prayers for CFCAC and our mission of putting our “FAITH in ACTION”.
